We seek to avoid negative impacts on natural systems, and understand that unnecessarily damaging them is not only unethical and undesirable, but also negatively impacts human welfare. As a result, our goal is biodiversity conservation and protecting natural resources and natural ecosystems while providing superior healthcare construction services.
Ecosystem Services Provided
At JOTMedical, we are knowledgeable about managing ecosystem services for healthcare construction. We maintain a focus based on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment conducted by the UN which investigated the impact of human actions on ecosystems and human well being. Four categories of ecosystem services were identified, including regulating, cultural, supporting, and provisioning services.
Supporting Services
Supporting services to habitat functioning, basis of ecosystems, and the maintenance of viable species gene pools. Supporting Services are essential for the health of all other ecosystem services and how well an ecosystem functions.
Species at Risk
One ecosystem service we provide is identifying potential species at risk, in order to be able to protect those species if a project is planned in their habitat. The assessment details their natural and ecological heritage so an effective environmental management plan can be developed. We manage required habitat services and other actions.
Ecological Risk Assessment
We conduct ecological risk assessments that meet and exceed government requirements and industry standards. Based upon these assessments, we develop plans for remediation or habitat restoration that allow you to still meet your facility goals.
Environmental Impact Assessment
If your healthcare construction project could disturb the environment, We conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment. These are an essential part of Environmental Assessments but can be standalone. We have completed these for several projects where development plans indicate that ecological and natural heritage systems might have been impacted.
Cultural Services
Cultural services include ecosystem benefits such as recreation or intellectual and spiritual enrichment. We understand and value these benefits; in designs, where possible, we create outdoor spaces and feature windows to enable connecting with nature, which is also known to enhance patient care and outcomes.
We maintain a trusted relationship with First Nations communities. We conduct Traditional Knowledge studies, as a critical component of environmental services. Our Traditional Knowledge studies ensure a holistic perspective on a project. Interviews and consultation, analysis of findings, area inspections, maps, and other activities are conducted to ensure thoroughness.
Regulating Services
These are benefits obtained from moderations to ecosystem processes like erosion, natural hazard regulation, waste management and climate regulation. We include these considerations in assessments, and our environmental consulting services assist in providing actionable guidance in responsible management of these benefits and processes.
